News From Moraine

March is Reading Month 2019, and Moraine Leaders are WILD About Reading!
Reading Activity Calendar: Find our 2019 MIRM Activity Calendar in the attachments section. Students can chose any or all of the weekly activities. If students complete 4 or more activities in a week they can return their weekly slip to their classroom teacher on Mondays starting March 11th. Each week, returned MIRM activity slips will be placed in a drawing to win a $10.00 certificate that can be used toward the purchase of books at our April Scholastic Book Fair. There will be two $10.00 certificate winners drawn on each of the following Tuesdays, March 12th, 19th, & 26th. Names will be announced the following Wednesday. Let’s get WILD about reading Moraine!
Please feel free to share photos and videos of your little readers completing the challenges on the Moraine parent facebook page to help build excitement for the weekly reading challenges!
Author Visits: Moraine will be hosting several authors throughout the month. Upcoming author dates for grades K-2 are Monday, March 25th and for grades 3-5, Thursday, March 14th and Monday, March 25th.
Vocabulary Word Parade: On Wednesday, March 20th we will be having an all school Vocabulary Word Parade! Our last vocabulary parade was 6 years ago in 2013! This parade is designed to foster the enjoyment of reading and writing and will hopefully promote interactions with new vocabulary words in an engaging and creative way. For our Vocabulary Word Parade, students will select a word that will become a costume. We encourage students to create a simple costumes that visually represent a vocabulary word appropriate for their grade level. Please see the Vocabulary Word Parade attachment for more information.
Book Swap: We will also continue the tradition of the Book Swap where students can bring in gently used books anytime between now and March 15th Students can bring in as many books as they would like, but they will only be choosing 1 book at our Book Swap. At least 1 of the books students bring in for the swap should be a book that friends at their same grade level would like to read. All extra books brought in and not chosen by our students at the Book Swap will be donated to Detroit Headstart. So, please clean out your bookshelves and send in any books you can for our Book Swap.
The Book Swap will be on March 27th in the afternoon in the Moraine Media Center. This is when our students will have the opportunity to chose a "new" book to read and enjoy! Only those students who bring in a book will be able to participate in the Book Exchange.
Student Authored Books: Student Authored Books are due on Thursday, March 28th. Student authored books will be on display in the Moraine Media Center April 8th-18th. Books will be returned to our authors the week of April 22nd.
Classroom Reading Celebrations: Classroom Reading Celebrations will be held in classrooms on Friday, March 29th. Please watch your child's classroom newsletter for more information.

For the past thirty years, Pizza Cutter has been providing bookmarks with a voucher for a free personal pizza to every Moraine reader at the end of March is Reading month. Thank you Pizza Cutter! These certificates will be coming home in Monday Envelopes on March 25th. Please thank Pizza Cutter for their generosity and ongoing support throughout the years.
