Moraine Elementary is gearing up for an exciting March is Reading Month (MIRM), filled with engaging activities, special visitors, and opportunities to celebrate the joy of reading! Throughout the month, students will participate in dress-up days, reading challenges, and fun literacy-based events to foster a love for books and storytelling.
Kick-Off Week & Inclusion Week
To start MIRM, Moraine will celebrate alongside Northville Inclusion Week with unified dress-up themes:
- March 3rd: Come as you are! It’s PJ Day!
- March 4th: We are all part of the team – Jersey Day!
- March 5th: Show your superpower! Dress up as your favorite superhero!
- March 6th: Spread love! Wear pink and red!
- March 7th: Northville is Inclusive – Wear your READ or Moraine shirt or Inclusion Spirit Wear!
On March 5th, students from Northville High School’s Unified Peer Program will visit Moraine to facilitate Inclusion Week activities and highlight the importance of acceptance and belonging in our schools.
Reading Land Challenge
Students can embark on an exciting literary adventure with Reading Land, a board game that encourages reading in a fun and interactive way. Using a special die (available for download), students move along the game board by completing reading-related tasks. Completed game boards are due by March 19th, and participants will have a chance to win a $5.00 Barnes & Noble Gift Card on March 20th-21st.

Author Visit: Karen & Darrin Brege
Moraine is thrilled to welcome Karen and Darrin Brege on Friday, March 7th! This dynamic husband-and-wife duo—an author and illustrator comedy team—will share their passion for reading, writing, and storytelling in an engaging and entertaining presentation.
Book Swap & Donations
The annual Book Swap returns this year! From March 3rd-12th, students can bring in gently used books to exchange. Each student may select one book from the swap. Any unchosen books will be donated to Moraine Lending Libraries or Birdie’s Book Mobile, which promotes literacy for children in Detroit. This initiative is being facilitated by a Northville High School student, making it a true community effort!
The Book Swap will take place on Friday, March 14th.
Classroom Reading Celebrations
From March 17th-21st, classrooms will host their own Reading Celebrations. Keep an eye on classroom newsletters for details on how each class will celebrate reading.
Student Authored Books
This year, over 125 students created their own Student Authored Books! These unique works will be displayed in the Media Center throughout March for students to enjoy. Mrs. Harkin, our media specialist, will even read some of these books during media time. Books will be returned to their authors in early April.
Pizza Cutter Reading Rewards
Thanks to the generosity of Pizza Cutter, every Moraine student will receive a Pizza Bookmark at the end of MIRM. Each bookmark includes a voucher for a free personal pizza, rewarding students for their dedication to reading. Look for these certificates in Monday Envelopes on March 17th!
