Northville High School’s Mr. Mike Rumbell Featured in Statewide #proudMIeducator Video

Northville High School Band Director Mr. Mike Rumbell has been recognized by the Michigan Department of Education in their latest #proudMIeducator video, spotlighting his remarkable legacy of over 53 years in the classroom.

As one of Michigan’s longest-serving high school band teachers, Mr. Rumbell’s impact on music education—and on generations of Northville students—has been profound. Serving as only the third band director in Northville High School’s history, he has helped shape the school’s music program into a place where students thrive not only artistically but personally and academically.

“Music for its own sake is a real good thing,” said Mr. Rumbell in the video. “It’s important. It’s as important as any other subject is, and for most students that are in the program, that’s why they go to school.”

State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice praised Mr. Rumbell’s decades of service, noting the broader value of music education in Michigan schools.

“Music education can be a gateway to a wide variety of experiences that lead to a brighter future for Michigan students,” said Dr. Rice. “The Michigan Department of Education appreciates and salutes Mr. Mike Rumbell for his long-standing commitment to our children.”

The #proudMIeducator campaign, launched in 2016, celebrates passionate and dedicated educators across the state. Mr. Rumbell’s feature serves not only as a tribute to his career but also as an inspiration for future educators. His story reflects the heart of Michigan’s commitment to uplifting the teaching profession and supporting students through the arts.
